The odd one out next to D03 and D04: same 1/8” cutting diameter, but straight flutes instead of a spiral, and a straight-through 1/8” shank instead of their reduced 1/4”. S01’s little sibling in geometry class, not its little sibling in size — S01 is a 1-1/8” surfacing head, this is a precision detail bit two orders of magnitude smaller.

Feeds & Speeds

For the X-Carve Pro and its 1.5 kW spindle. Computed from first principles rather than the established downcut table — straight flutes don’t auger chips the way a spiral does, so this is a genuinely different geometry class, not just another diameter. Chipload sits a bit below D03’s at the same rpm: Amana’s own description notes this bit trades some feed rate for finish quality, and a straight flute clears a closed slot less efficiently than a spiral does.

Notes

This one can plunge straight down, unlike every downcut in the drawer. A downcut spiral augers chips into its own hole on a plunge, which is why D01–D04 are all ramp-only. A straight flute has no helix to do that — it shears in place without pulling chips vertically, so a direct Z plunge doesn’t pack the hole. Amana grinds this bit center-cutting specifically for that reason.

Maximum cut depth is 0.4375” — the shallowest bit in the shop. Built for detail work: engraving-adjacent passes, fine pocket floors, anything where finish quality matters more than material removal rate.

No reduced shank. D03 and D04 step down from a 1/4” shank to a 1/8” cutting edge; this one is 1/8” all the way from collet to tip. Less rigid over the exposed length as a result — light passes aren’t optional here the way they’re merely prudent on the reduced-shank bits.
